AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD TRADE IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE: THE CASE OF SLOVENIAN INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Hartmann, Monika.
One of the striking features in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries is the deterioration of their agricultural and food trade balance during transition to a market economy as imports increased faster than exports or exports even declined. This paper investigates the Slovenian agricultural and food trade in more detail focusing on changes in the geographical distribution of trade and the nature of trade specialization on the basis of the Grubel-Lloyd Intra-Industry Trade index and Marginal Intra-Industry Trade Indices. The results indicate that Slovenian agricultural and food trade largely remains of the inter-industry type with specialisation of exports towards the former Yugoslav markets and imports from the European Union. The proportion of...

ASYMMETRIC PATTERN OF INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA AgEcon
Kim, MinKyoung; Cho, Guedae; Koo, Won W..
This study proposes alternative rationales to explain an asymmetric intra-industry trade pattern between the United States and Canada after the free trade agreement became effective. Using time-series data, a gravity equation is developed which enables us to examine the impacts of relative market size, exchange rates, and transportation costs on bilateral trade. It is found that these three effects have to be taken together in order to explain the asymmetric intra-industry trade pattern. Exchange rate impacts on bilateral trade are found to the most significant, indicating that U.S. dollar appreciation causes a more asymmetric trade pattern for agricultural goods than for large-scale manufacturing goods.

FOREIGN TRADE AND TRANSITION PROCESS IN AGRI-FOOD SECTOR OF UKRAINE AgEcon
Levkovych, Inna; Hockmann, Heinrich.
In this study we try to assess the progress of the transformation process in Ukrainian agri-food sector. The development of foreign trade may serve as indicator of success of market reforms. Thus we analyse the changes in the trade structure of agri-food sector during 1996-2005. Also we compute indicators of inter- (RTA Index) and intra-industrial (Grubel-Lloyd Index, Brülhart A-Index) trade for this period. These indicators provide information about competitiveness of Ukrainian products, type and development of trade flows. We discuss also which policy measures are necessary for further economic integration of Ukraine into world markets

HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE IN THE PROCESSED FOOD SECTOR AgEcon
Frahan, Bruno Henry de; Tharakan, Joe.
For the first time in the food trade literature, the determinants of intra-industry trade (IIT) in horizontally differentiated products and vertically differentiated products are separately tested using the most recent theoretical models of IIT. For both 1980 and 1990, the econometric results confirm country- and industry- specific determinants proposed by these models for explaining horizontal and vertical IIT in the European processed food sector.

INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE IN AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD PRODUCTS: THE CASE OF UKRAINE AgEcon
Luka, Oksana; Levkovych, Inna.
The process of economic transformation in Ukraine is characterized by, among other things, a change in agricultural and food product trading patterns. Ukraine has remained a net exporter of agro-food products, but the total volume and worth, as well as the geographical structure of trade flows, has altered significantly, and further adjustments can be expected to take place in upcoming years. This paper examines Ukrainian agro-food trade, particularly focusing on different aspects of intra-industry trade (IIT), which is usually associated with low adjustment costs. To examine the development of IIT in agro-food products between Ukraine and its trading partners, two approaches are adopted. The Grubel-Lloyd Index is used to calculate the intensity of IIT and...

Intra-Industry Trade in Agricultural and Food Products: The Case of Ukraine AgEcon
Levkovych, Inna; Luka, Oksana.
We present an analysis of agricultural and food trade in Ukraine over the period 1996-2002 focusing on different aspects of intra-industry trade. We estimated Grubel-Lloyd and marginal IIT indexes to examine the relevance of intra-industry trade between Ukraine and its trading partners and the changes in nature of trade flows over time. The results indicate that the major part of agro-food trade is of the inter-industry type, and thus a product of underlying comparative advantages. The low level of index seems to be typical for primary sectors in comparison to industries with higher product differentiation. Also marginal IIT appears to be low, the structure of the changes in agro-food trade flows between Ukraine and its trading partners during the analyzed...

Intra-Industry Trade in Horizontally and Vertically Differentiated Agri-Food Products between Hungary and the EU AgEcon
Ferto, Imre; Hubbard, Lionel J..
Intra-industry trade in agri-food products between Hungary and the EU is shown to be low and dominated by vertically rather than horizontally differentiated products, suggesting higher economic adjustment costs. Following recent empirical studies, we then test econometrically for the determinants of this trade using different measures of horizontal and vertical trade, and employing an array of popular explanatory variables. Results suggest that separating the measure of intra-industry trade into vertical and horizontal provides for better estimation and supports the contention that the determinants may differ by type of trade. In the regression analysis, the level of intra-industry trade is found to serve as a better dependent variable than the degree or...

Intra-Industry Trade, Multilateral Trade Integration, and Invasive Species Risk AgEcon
Tu, Anh Thuy; Beghin, John C..
We analyze the linkage between protectionism and invasive species (IS) hazard in the context of two-way trade and multilateral trade integration, two major features of real-world agricultural trade. Multilateral integration includes the joint reduction of tariffs and trade costs among trading partners. Multilateral trade integration is more likely to increase damages from IS than predicted by unilateral trade opening under the classic Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson (HOS) framework because domestic production (the base susceptible to damages) is likely to increase with expanding export markets. A country integrating its trade with a partner characterized by relatively higher tariff and trade costs is also more likely to experience increased IS damages via...

Intra-industry trade of Hungarian agricultural products and the EU-accession AgEcon
Jambor, Attila.
This paper analyses structural changes in Hungarian agricultural trade after EU accession, especially considering intra-industry trade. Results suggest that EU accession raised the intensity of trade contacts but had a negative impact on trade balance. After accession, national agricultural exports by countries and products has shown a high but decreasing level of concentration, while in the case of agricultural imports, concentration was increasingly high by country and constantly low by product. Agricultural trade between Hungary and EU-15 is basically inter-industrial in nature, though the role of intra-industry trade is increasing.

Marginal Intra-Industry Trade and Adjustment Costs in the Hungarian Food Industry AgEcon
Ferto, Imre.
Recent developments in intra-industry trade (IIT) literature focus on the relationships between IIT and adjustment costs associated with changes in trade pattern. The effects of trade liberalisation depend, inter alia, on whether trade is of an inter-industry or intra-industry nature. The belief that IIT leads to lower costs of factor market adjustment, particularly for labour, gives rise to the smooth-adjustment hypothesis Hungarian agricultural trade was liberalised via WTO agreement and some regional trade integration agreement (Association Agreement, CEFTA). It is reasonable assume that these partial trade liberalisation should have an effect on trade pattern and employment changes. The aim of the paper is to identify the effects of partial trade...

Trade Types in Slovenian Primary and Processed Agricultural Trade AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Majkovic, Darja; Turk, Jernej.
The significance of the processed food products in agricultural and food trade is increasing in Slovenia as well as in the other developed countries. The large share of agricultural and food trade is inter-industry trade. The significance of intra-industry trade (IIT) is increasing with the degree of processing. In particular, IIT is based on products differentiated in quality where low quality vertical IIT prevails. This kind of trade specialization and trade patterns, together with trade geography, imply some similarities in these trade developments with developing countries and countries with less competitive food processing rather than with more advanced European Union countries with the competitive food processing sector.
